Head Master's Welcome
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Ryde School with Upper Chine. For over 100 years the School has been educating young people from the Isle of Wight and beyond.
The heart of the Ryde educational experience is shown in the Ryde School crest. The torch that symbolises knowledge, learning through experience and exploration, not just books. The three stars for body, mind and soul which represent physical, mental and spiritual learning. The gold represents the excellence to be achieved and the chevrons the reward for doing so, and for building character.
This has represented education delivered throughout the School’s history and highlights how there is more to an education than excellent exam results. We pride ourselves on a rounded and holistic experience for all pupils, as relevant in 1921 when the School was founded as it is today.
Underpinning a child’s education here are our school values of ambition, responsibility, courage and respect. We see these as essential values that will positively impact the lives of Rydeians not only while they attend our School but wherever life takes them in the future. They are lived out in all aspects of their daily lives while a pupil here and a fundamental part of ensuring all pupils flourish. Our school motto ‘Ut Prosim’ - That I may be of service - also plays an important role and all pupils will undertake community service and learn the importance of helping those in need or less fortunate.
As the leading independent day and boarding school on the Isle of Wight we welcome children aged 2 to 18 from across the Island and many pupils who travel the short distance across the Solent to us from Portsmouth and surrounding areas. We are also fortunate to have a vibrant boarding community made up of pupils from further afield in the UK and from different countries from all over the world.
We are proud of our academic results, both for pupils going to universities such as Oxford and Cambridge and those who, with great effort, determination and support, secure exam results way above their national predictions. Importantly, we maintain our commitment to educating the whole child in everything we do.
Our sports, activities and clubs give pupils a vast array of opportunities to thrive outside of the classroom and develop skills and talents that form a key part of our rounded education. We have very successful Duke of Edinburgh's Awards and CCF groups, and drama and music are a joy in our new Jenny Kerry Performing Arts Centre. Will Turner, Head Master |
