Introducing Mr Pavlou and Mr Graham
Maths Senior School

#FridayIntroduction this week is two of our senior maths teachers Mr Pavlou & Mr Graham.

Paul Pavlou is Head of Maths in the senior school and enjoys all aspects of maths, from “small things, helping Year 7's use a calculator for the first time or bigger issues like planning a curriculum to support everyone”.

Prior to Ryde School Paul graduated from Warwick & worked on the mainland before moving to teach on the Island. Paul’s vision for his Department is “to be viewed as the most exciting, useful & vital subject”. Paul is introducing a new course to Sixth Form next year which ties in with his goal of helping everyone find the relevance of Maths. Paul said Ryde “is the most friendly, positive school I've been in” explaining that “this school has ‘can do’ [attitude] running through it”.

Another member of the Math’s department, who loves the “kind & tolerant atmosphere”, is Mr Allan Graham, Allan teaches Maths & Further Maths at A Level & GCSE.

Before joining Ryde 13 years ago, Allan spent most of his career as Head Master of independent schools in South Africa, challenging the Apartheid system by providing a non-racial education in defiance of law. After the political change, Mr Graham’s schools set out to be centres of racial tolerance in a divided society. He told us these schools are now thriving in the new South Africa! Throughout Allan’s headships he taught maths saying “maths has always been my first love in education”.

Allan said he loves our “small-ish community” & the challenge of “unearthing mathematical talent and nurturing it through to final success”.

Paul & Allan work alongside colleagues Leighann, Jodi, Louisa & Dmyytro so the maths classrooms are busy places; with a hum of industry & hard work. As a highly qualified maths department, they all teach with passion and share their love of Maths with our pupils.

We asked Paul & Allan their favourite place on the Island, Allan’s is his garden & Paul said “anywhere I can see the sea & feel the sand”.
